Ghana Fashion & Design Week 2012: LICORICE from Italian Vogue

18 May

PRESS RELEASE

Ghana Fashion & Design Week introduces: LICORICE.

Ghana Fashion & Design Week reveals its 2012 London Campaign on Vogue Black Italia featuring the KORLEKIE collection by Ghanaian-British Designer Beatrice Korlekie Newman in collaboration with Brazilian Shoe label, Studio TMLS.

Exclusively released by Luxury publication Vogue Black Italia to mark the contribution of Ghanaian talents in the fashion and

creative industry, a collaboration of forward thinking creative individuals teamed up to realize the vision behind the GFDW 2012

campaign photo shoot, themed – LICORICE, commonly know to be “Black” and “Sweet”, taken from the root of the natural legume

plant that is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia, meaning “ Sweet Root”.

Inspiration for creative direction taken both from their Ghanaian and British roots, envisioned by Daryl Rita Osekreh projects a

unique combination of avant-garde meets culture look with an exaggerative size Bantu Knot hair styles perfected by stylist

Sonia Wong.

A glamorous dark look depicting the black liquorish colour for both make-up and nails is strongly projected by celebrity make-up

artist Claire De Graft and Nail Technician Pebbles Aikens, juxtaposed against a sombre background of vintage English décor.

The shoot features Ghanaian/UK models Soraya Akua Khalil who was the face of Italian clothing brand Benetton for its 2010 It’s

My Time campaign, and upcoming model Phyllis Tekyi-Berto.

The Korlekie brand quickly becoming a favourite of celebrities including Alesha Dixon, Shingai Shoniwa, Rita Ora, Sabrina

Washignton exudes avant-garde glamour, luxury, intricate craftsmanship and sophistication. Defining a fresh and unique approach

that represents her African roots in her collection through weaving, knitting, and fringing of various types of fabrics including leather.

Beatrice’s signature look consists of heavy embellishment, beading and intricate handwork that is inspired by her Afro-European

background/culture, and takes inspiration from the beautiful beading and embroidery of African clothes and lace fabrics.

Models are styled from a selection of Korlekie’s intricately knitted garments, knitted leather jacket with cowl trousers and fitted

jacket made in fine Bazin riche brocade fabrics from Mali.

Tommy Ton’s Street Style

11 May

No one does Street Style outside of fashion event’s like Tommy Ton of Style.com. His photography is an inspiring pictorial documentation of the eclectic and differing styles of fashion’s elite. Starting the Jak and Jil blog in 2005, this canadian photographer was first inspired to get into the fashion world at the age of 13 after watching a Fashion Television segment on Tom Ford (wikipedia). Specializing in candid photos; he captured fashion insiders running in and out of shows, talking with friends, talking on the phone, and zoomed in on their artful accessory styling or details of their fashion forward outfits.  A very different photography style than the stagnant “head to toe” poses made famous by the Sartorialist; his unique street style photography has gotten widespread attention throughout the industry. In addition to shooting for is blog; Tommy Tom now focuses on covering fashion weeks all over the world for style.com and gq.com; and other freelance work for magazines and designers.

Enjoy some of his beautiful photography below!

The MET GALA

9 May

This dress is SO MAJOR...it's not surprising its by Ms.Rachel Zoe!

The MET GALA was earlier this week on Monday, May 7th. A fabulous event with a hefty ticket price (reportedly $25,000 a pop), the event is the “coming home” for NYC socialites, fashion elite, and music’s brightest stars. Descending upon the museum, this years gala was a celebration of Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli, who are featured in the Costume Institutes newest exhibit “Impossible Conversations”.

With so many attendees hitting fashion high notes, the best dressed list far outweighs the inevitable questionable choices!

Enjoy the pics!
